Derby Daily Express, 17th March 1916 Lance Corporal Hendley died of wounds at Givenchy, at the age of 23. He resided at 22, Leaper Street, Derby, and was employed at the Post Office. He gained his Distinguished Conduct Medal for conspicuous gallantry in July 1915, 'while remaining at his post, by throwing bombs at a critical period when the enemy started counter bombing. His bravery and coolness served as a fine example to others, who, at the time, were somewhat shaken.'
